 – This small town sits an hour from the suburbs of Mississippi’s capital city of Jackson, but it rests a world away. It is the poorest town in one of the nation’s poorest counties. .“We were already off the cliff with no safety net,” said Holmes County Supervisor Leroy Johnson. “Then COVID came.” Until July 6, Holmes County had more deaths from COVID-19 than Jackson’s Hinds County, which is 10 times larger. Total deaths as of Aug. 23: 50.
